Beauty Heroes January 2018: Maya Chia

Beauty Heroes is a monthly beauty discovery service that has changed my life! Each month’s beauty box features a full-size Hero Product and a deluxe sample Sidekick for about $39/month. January’s Beauty Heroes discovery box featured two products from Maya Chia.

The Hero Product was The Eye Achiever ($70). This fast-absorbing serum is formulated with natural marine and plant actives to revitalize, brighten and restore firmness to the delicate skin around the eye.

My experience with eye creams and serums has been somewhat limited. Though I’ve tried a number of samples, and even purchased a product or two, I’ve devoted most of my money time and attention to products that help calm and relieve my dry, sensitive skin. Having just turned 34, I haven’t yet developed the kind of fines lines I assume would prompt me to get serious about finding an effective eye product that thrills me the same way an elegant night cream or a luxurious face oil does, and since eye serums and creams often cost just as much, I’ve never felt strongly compelled to add an eye serum to my daily routine.

The Eye Achiever changes all of this.

This product is fun. Rather than using a traditional bottle with a pump dispenser, Maya Chia packaged The Eye Achiever in a rollerball applicator. Game changer. The metal rollerball cools on contact so it felt pleasant instantly. I wasn’t sure I’d see lasting results, but each time I applied it, I immediately enjoyed the temporary cooling sensation. The applicator also dispenses just the right amount of serum; the skin under my eyes never felt heavy or goopy and I never had to worry about my typically heavy hand applying too much serum. All of this, plus its spicy, exotic smell made the serum so enjoyable, I happily used it every day and regular use yielded some impressive results.

My under eye contour feels firmer and is much more hydrated since I started using The Eye Achiever. While I don’t battle serious fine lines (yet), I noticed the skin under my eyes became less crepe-y and much smoother. The difference was especially noticeable whenever I applied under-eye concealer; it glided and blended easier than it ever had and didn’t settle as the day went on. I can’t say I noticed a drastic change in the darkness of my under-eye circles — I feel like some of that is my own fault for the late nights and early mornings — but the overall improvement in my skin was obvious enough that The Eye Achiever will definitely be a repurchase when this bottle is gone!

January’s Sidekick was The Super Blend ($105), a pressed serum that had been on my wish list for months. Boasting Maya Chia’s most complex ingredient deck — vitamin C, co-enzyme Q10 and babassu and kokum butters just to name a few — The Super Blend combines the power of a serum with the moisture of a balm.

Having such dry skin and no previous attachment to an eye serum, I expected to like the Sidekick better than the Hero in this month’s box. The Super Blend sounded like the perfect product for me, but after using it for a week, my skin was begging for more moisture. Additionally, I wasn’t in love with the fragrance of The Super Blend. It’s a unique lemon-citrus scent that reminds me more of green cleaning than green beauty. It’s not entirely unpleasant and it doesn’t last more than a few minutes, but it takes away from the ritual and leaves me a little disappointed.

I decided to apply The Super Couple Ultra Luxe Face Oil ($85) — a Beauty Heroes discovery from January 2017 (and a product I’ve since repurchased!) — before layering it with The Super Blend and that resolved the issue of hydration quite well, but the pressed serum isn’t a stand out in the Maya Chia lineup for me.

This month, The Eye Achiever was my hero!

A note about Beauty Heroes: Beauty Heroes has completely changed the way I experience clean beauty. My love for this company is real. Each month’s beauty discovery box contains a full-size Hero Product and a deluxe sample-size Sidekick for about $39/month. Many of the full-size Hero Products retail for upward of $70 and the deluxe Sidekicks upward of $30, so it’s a very affordable way to explore new brands and products. Additionally, members of the Beauty Heroes Tribe receive 15% off all purchases at The Beauty Store and free shipping on orders over $75, so it’s less expensive to repurchase items you’ve discovered and loved.
